Teacher of the Year for Lake County

Welcome to the 2016-2107 School Year!
I am very excited to start our new school year even after 21 years of teaching.   Time flies by so fast especially when I am teaching many of my previous students children. It is great to develop positive relationships with the families as I still believe that a child's educational success comes from the collaborative effort between myself, the parents, and my students.

The common core requires a lot of effort so it is important that your child tries their very best by listening, participating in class, as well as, practicing at home. I will be sending home a newsletter so you know what skills are being taught in the class as well as tips to help you assist your child so they are successful.

What else do I do at our school and district?
Student Council Advisor, District's Youth Leadership Team founder and advisor, Welcoming Event Coordinator, Zion Community Walk Steering Committee Member, PBIS Committee Member, and Girls on the Run Coach.

Do you want to know a little bit more about your child's teacher?
I live in Gurnee with my husband , Shawn, and children, Kylee, age 12, and Austin, age 9.  I keep very busy participating in their weekly soccer, baseball, gymnastics and dancing events.  In the wee hours of the morning I like to train for my own sporting events which includes half marathon, marathons, and triathlons. In August, I qualified to participate in the USA Triathlon National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska.  I will be excited to share with your child about the experience the first week of school.

We use a clip system in our classroom.
Your child has a calendar that is kept in their binder that tracks their daily effort. Please look at it and initial each day so your child can earn a pride paw. Each week, your child will have an opportunity to earn an award for good behavior. If you have any questions or concerns please call or write me a note.

Miss Pettis and Miss Swallow will be assisting me during Math RTI. Miss Swallow will assist me during Guided Reading time so they can  help me differentiate my instruction.  Every year students come in my classroom with different strengths as well as weaknesses.  My assistants help to facilitate guided reading, guided math, guided writing and one-on-one instruction.  We want everyone to meet their NWEA growth targets so it is very important to me that everyone learns at the level they need to be successful.

Students always take a pretest before each MODULE.  This will help me to decide which students will be part of the daily lessons as well as those that will be challenged if they already know the content. I also evaluate your child's CHECK UPS and FINAL TEST scores. This information allows we to group students during our MATH RTI time.  Students that need a skill retaught will meet with Miss Swallow to practice.  Students that need assistance in improving their FACT FLUENCY meets with Miss Pettis who reviews strategies to improve their basic facts. I work with students that need to be challenged.  Other students will be working on compass math, xtramath, and playing ORIGO games that practices different math skills.

Writers Workshop
Check out a book that my past students wrote to familiarize yourself with the 6 TRAIT approach to writing.  We will be learning about each trait to improve our writing throughout the year as well as incorporating Writer's Workshop.
